Door Obsession

There’s such richness in the architecture and design at every corner that you turn in Europe. The buildings, public spaces and even the simplest elements such as doorways, never seem to bore me when I visit. I’m often drawn to their vibrant colours, shapes and even how they are often adorned by equally vibrant floral patches that always appear to be flawlessly and effortlessly placed.

Sometimes, I see these beautiful, yet simple architectural pieces through my “lens eye” in black and white first before I photograph them. Other times (more often than I care to admit), I feel them speaking to me, asking to be photographed as if they long to be captured before completely disappearing into the dust of a demolition site or grumbling abandoned lot.

Regardless, I always seem to answer the call, take a moment to photograph them as if I am honouring them in some way. As the saying goes, it’s always nice to “stop and smell the roses”. In my case, I almost always “stop to capture the doors”.

This latest door muse was captured in the enchanting city of Sintra, Portgual.
